The Science of Concurrent Training

Lift and run in the same week and you inherit the interference effect. The papers since Hickson tell you when strength pays, when endurance holds, and how close is too close.

The Hickson study, without the myth
In 1980, Hickson put strength and endurance in the same subjects and watched strength stall (Hickson, 1980). That's the origin story of every hybrid argument online, and it's often quoted like a ban. It wasn't a ban. It was a hard protocol.
High-frequency endurance stacked on a serious strength block. Strength rose, then plateaued or fell, while endurance still improved. If you train twice a day, five days a week, with no respect for residual fatigue, you're closer to Hickson than you think. I'm probably not running that lab, and you're probably not either. I lift and run in the same week around a job, a keyboard, and whatever's on the calendar. The question isn't whether interference exists. It's how large it is at the dose you actually use.
I still keep the paper in the back of my head on weeks when the running volume creeps up and the bar starts to feel slow. That's the useful version.
What the papers actually say
Fyfe, Bishop, and Stepto laid out the molecular contest (Fyfe, 2014). Endurance work can turn on AMPK and related signals that help mitochondria. Heavy resistance work wants mTOR and muscle protein synthesis. Run them too close, too often, and the endurance signal can dampen the strength one. That's a mechanism, not a life sentence. Intensity, volume, session order, rest between the two, and which fibers you tax all change the size of the clash. Easy aerobic work is not the same collision as a VO2 interval set parked after heavy squats.
Hawley and Lundby put the modern question in one line: power and endurance as polar opposites, or willing partners (Hawley, 2025). Partners need spacing, fuel, and a primary quality for the block. They don't need you to prove toughness by stacking every hard thing on Tuesday.
Schumann's 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis is the map I actually use (Schumann, 2024). Concurrent training often attenuates lower-body strength and power more than it hurts endurance. The effect is larger in trained men. Women and less-trained athletes frequently keep more of both. That isn't permission to be sloppy if you're not a trained man. The cost is specific. Your deadlift and your 5K don't share the same risk. If you're trying to add kilos to a squat while stacking long runs, you're on the expensive square.
Hu and colleagues reviewed sequence: which session comes first when strength and endurance share a day (Hu, 2026). If strength is the quality I'm protecting, I lift first. Residual fatigue from a hard run changes bar speed and how much high-quality force you can express. If a race is the goal this month, the order can flip. Same-day work isn't forbidden. It's expensive. Separate by several hours when you can, eat between, and if life forces one window, shorten the second session.
Not all endurance is equal interference. Seaborne's 2025 work found that concurrent training with long-interval HIIT did not impair skeletal muscle protein synthesis or hypertrophy in that protocol (Seaborne, 2025). That isn't a license to HIIT every afternoon. Type, spacing, and total load matter more than the word cardio. Dutt's 2026 umbrella review is the programming layer: manage total endurance volume, keep high-intensity endurance scarce near heavy lifting, and use recovery as a designed input (Dutt, 2026).
How I think about a week
I try to give strength a signal and endurance a signal, then stop making them argue on the same legs. Compounds, progressive overload, enough hard sets. Not a blur of circuits. Easy volume for the engine, a little intense work for the ceiling.
A practical template I come back to: two to four lifting sessions, most of the running easy, one harder aerobic or interval day placed away from heavy lower body. If I must combine, I lift first and keep the run honest and short. That's the Dutt and Hu reading in practice (Dutt, 2026; Hu, 2026).
Then I watch the quality I said I would protect. If squat speed dies for three weeks while weekly kilometers climb, interference isn't a theory. It's the log. I cut endurance volume or intensity before I add more coffee and another accessory day. That's the whole trick, and it's boring, which is why people skip it.
What this is not
This isn't a reason to quit running, and it isn't a reason to treat every easy jog like Hickson's protocol. Hickson told you the collision can be brutal at high dose (Hickson, 1980). Schumann told you who pays (Schumann, 2024). Seaborne told you not every intense bout kills growth (Seaborne, 2025). Dutt and Hu told you how to arrange the week (Dutt, 2026; Hu, 2026). Your job is to pick a primary quality, budget the second, and recover like both sessions happened, because they did.
This isn't medical advice. It won't diagnose overtraining, injury, or illness. If something hurts in a way that isn't ordinary training fatigue, see a clinician. The papers are constraints. You still write the program.
