Lifting while running: how to keep both

Concurrent training is not a myth. The practical question is how to keep strength while you keep running, without turning every session into a test.

A hybrid week asks one body for two adaptations. Hickson showed that when strength and endurance are trained hard in the same block, strength can stall even if the lifting program looks unchanged (Hickson, 1980). The paper is more than forty years old. Coaches still cite it because the pattern keeps showing up in gyms and on roads. If you lift and run in the same practice, you are not doing something exotic. You are doing concurrent training. The science is about shrinking the tax, not about picking a single sport.

Fyfe, Bishop, and Stepto mapped the molecular story. Endurance work can switch on signals that compete with the ones that drive force and size (Fyfe, 2014). That competition is not fate. It depends on how close the sessions sit, how hard they are, and which muscles they share. Two easy days do not write Hickson into the log. Two maximal days in a short window might.

The tax is also uneven. Explosive power and lower-body maximal strength are the qualities most often blunted. Muscle size is more stubborn. Schumann and colleagues pooled concurrent-training trials and looked at sex and training status. Males, on average, showed more interference in lower-body strength than females when endurance volume was high. Upper-body strength was less affected. Training status did not grant immunity (Schumann, 2024). If you are a man whose running lives on the same legs you squat, those sessions need protection. If your endurance is cycling or swimming, the overlap is smaller. Shared muscle groups are where the literature is least forgiving.

Lift first, or wait six hours

Sequence is one of the few levers you can pull this week. Hu and colleagues reviewed concurrent programs with different orders. When both sessions land on the same calendar day, doing the strength work first usually preserves strength better than running first and then lifting on tired legs (Hu, 2026).

The other honest option is time. Separate the sessions by six hours or more so glycogen, neural drive, and residual fatigue are not still sitting on the bar. Two-a-days are fine when one of them is easy. Two hard sessions in a three-hour window is how hybrid athletes accidentally rerun Hickson's study on themselves.

Same-session finishers (heavy squats, then hill repeats) feel efficient. They are efficient at creating interference. Put the quality you care about most first. For most people reading this, that is the lift. Easy aerobic work after lifting is a different conversation from intervals after a heavy lower-body day.

Stop chasing failure. Size is the stubborn one.

Hawley and Lundby argue that power and endurance are not polar opposites, and they are not free partners either (Hawley, 2025). The partnership works when you stop asking every session for a personal record. Chasing failure on every compound set, then stacking hard running, is a reliable way to flatten both curves. Leave repetitions in reserve on the lifts that share muscles with your running. Keep the volume if you need it. The last grinding reps do not have to live on the same day as intervals.

Seaborne and colleagues reported that concurrent training with long-interval high-intensity work did not impair skeletal muscle protein synthesis or hypertrophy in their protocol (Seaborne, 2025). That is encouraging. It is not a blank cheque to do everything at once. Muscle can still grow when endurance is programmed with care: enough energy across the week, enough sleep, and enough space between the hardest efforts.

The interference story is mainly about high-force, high-velocity, and lower-body strength under dense endurance load. It is not a claim that getting bigger while you run is impossible. If the goal is size plus durable aerobic work, protect the lifting quality and accept that peak sprint power may not rise at the same rate. Choose the quality that must not be compromised, then place it first.

Keep both. Do not ask them to peak together.

I treat this as a calendar problem more than a motivation problem. Lift when you are fresh, or wait at least six hours. Do not fail every set when the running week is already dense. Expect hypertrophy to hold up better than jump power. If you are male and running a lot, watch the squat and the deadlift before you watch the biceps.

None of this is a training prescription for your joints, your hormones, or your race calendar. People with pain, disordered eating, or no background under a bar need a qualified coach or clinician, not a closing paragraph. Keep both qualities. Just stop asking them to peak on the same afternoon.
