The wall, not the clock.

There is a photograph at a finisher wall. That day happened. Two full marathons last year sit on the same continuum as the gym work. I am not publishing the race title on that wall, or a finish time, until those details are logged with the same care as everything else here.

The easy version of this page would invent a highlight reel. That would be a lie of style even if the miles were real. The public claim is the practice: strength and endurance, together. The wall is a still from that practice, not a caption contest.

Why the clock got loud

The culture wants a number. Strava’s 2025 report said running remains the top sport on the platform, racing is up, and Gen Z is 75% more likely than Gen X to say their main motivation for exercise is a race or event. Walking became the second-most-recorded activity. More than half of users — 54% — now track more than one sport (Strava, 2025). A marathon wall sits right in the middle of that culture: a public finish, a photograph, a feed that wants a time.

GQ treated the hybrid athlete as an aspirational identity — the contradiction that stops the scroll (GQ, 2026). A wall photograph without a time refuses that loop. It is less useful to the feed. It is more honest until the log is done. The Guardian described hybrid training as fitter and stronger in the same block, not as a single peak (The Guardian, 2026). A finish line is one peak. The week around it is the actual practice.

Most of the work is not the wall

I am not anti-racing. A finish line is a useful constraint. Seiler’s 2010 review of endurance intensity distribution is still the reminder that most of the work that gets you to a wall is not the race itself. In nationally and internationally competitive endurance athletes he described a pattern of roughly 80% of sessions at low intensity and about 20% dominated by high-intensity work, with a lot of weekly volume sitting under the first threshold (Seiler, 2010). That is a description of how serious endurance weeks tend to look. It is not a screenshot of my calendar, and it is not a reason to turn every easy run into a secret tempo.

Walsh’s 2021 BJSM sleep consensus is the other half of the wall: athletes often do not get enough sleep, and performance, illness, and injury risk move with it (Walsh, 2021). The week after a marathon is still nights, food, and easy movement. A medal photograph does not replace that. Strava even noted that Friday was the quietest training day on the platform in 2025 — a small public hint that recovery has a calendar slot, even if the feed prefers Sunday finish lines (Strava, 2025).

What stays off the page

No invented splits. No borrowed medals. No fake “sub-3” I have not confirmed. Schumann’s concurrent-training review is the reason I also will not pretend the marathon block was free for the squat: concurrent work can blunt lower-body strength and power, especially in trained men, while endurance usually holds up better (Schumann, 2024). Wilson’s earlier meta-analysis already associated running, more than cycling, with smaller hypertrophy and strength gains when the two sit in the same program (Wilson, 2012). The wall does not cancel those papers. It sits on top of them.

When race names and times are written down properly, they can come here. Until then the photograph is enough: I showed up, I finished, I am not performing a time I have not confirmed.
