Nutrition for hybrid athletes: fuel the week, not a slogan

Lifting and running in the same week is a fuel problem before it is a supplement problem. Eat enough, place carbohydrate where the work is hard, and let sleep do its job.

Energy availability comes first
Hybrid training is two bills on one metabolism. Strength work wants amino acids and enough recovery. Endurance work wants carbohydrate and enough total energy that the aerobic engine does not eat the lifting. Thomas, Erdman, and Burke, writing the American College of Sports Medicine joint position on nutrition and athletic performance, put energy availability at the front of that conversation (Thomas, 2016). If intake does not match the work plus the cost of living, the rest of the macros become a rounding error.
Low energy availability is a mismatch: training load up, food down, or both. The signs are not mystical. Performance stalls. Sleep frays. Illness clusters. In women, menstrual function can change. In anyone, mood and bone stress can follow. Those patterns belong with a clinician and a sports dietitian, not with a tighter deficit from a podcast.
A hybrid week with a long run, a heavy lower day, and a desk job still needs a grocery list that respects all three. Under-fueling is a training error with medical edges.
Protein as a literature range. Carbs next to the hard work.
Kerksick and colleagues, in the International Society of Sports Nutrition review, discuss protein intakes commonly studied in people who train. A range often cited in that literature is about 1.4-2.0 grams per kilogram of body mass per day for exercising adults, spread across the day rather than parked in one dinner (Kerksick, 2018). That is a range reported in papers. It is not a prescription for your kidneys, your weight class, or your next eight weeks.
Hybrid athletes sometimes under-eat protein on long-run days because the run crowded out a meal, then overshoot with a single late sitting. The literature prefers distribution: a few feedings that each contain a meaningful dose, not one catch-up shake at midnight. Food first. Powder is a convenience, not a moral upgrade. Do not treat the top of a published range as a contest. More is not automatically more muscle when energy is already short and the next session is already on the calendar. If you have kidney disease, an eating disorder, or a clinician restriction, this paragraph does not apply to you.
Endurance sessions and high-volume lifting both draw on glycogen. Thomas (2016) and Kerksick (2018) both treat carbohydrate as the fuel that scales with duration and intensity, not as a food group to fear. Place more carbohydrate around the sessions that are long, intense, or both. Easy days can be quieter. A heavy squat day plus intervals in the same twenty-four hours is a carbohydrate day whether the calendar calls it a cut or not. Fruit, rice, bread, potatoes, and milk still count. If a product helps you hit a long session, that is logistics. It is not a requirement of the position stands.
Fluid for the conditions you are in
Hydration in the ACSM and ISSN literature is unglamorous. Start the session not already dehydrated. Replace fluid across the day. In long or hot work, sodium comes along with the water. There is no universal litre target that fits a cool morning easy run and a padel match in August heat.
Thirst, urine color as a rough check, and body-mass change across a long session are the field tools. They are not lab assays. They are better than copying a bottle count from someone twice your size. Hyponatremia from overdrinking plain water on very long events is a real clinical issue. So is finishing a brick session empty. Neither is solved by a slogan on a can.
Sleep is part of the diet
Walsh and colleagues convened expert consensus on sleep and the athlete (Walsh, 2021). Fullagar and colleagues reviewed how sleep loss hits exercise performance and the physiological response to training (Fullagar, 2015). You can hit protein targets and still throw the adaptation away with a 5 a.m. alarm stacked on a late interval. Caffeine has a time of day. Alcohol has a cost to sleep architecture. If the week is dense (lift, run, heat, travel), protect the night before you add another capsule.
Recovery is energy availability, protein distributed through the day, carbohydrate on the hard days, fluid that matches the weather, and sleep that the consensus papers keep putting back on the table.
